“Beyond the shape”. This is, in a nutshell, the introduction to our in-depth focus on EDM processes, which we develop with extreme precision for strategic industrial sectors such as energy, aerospace, medical, automotive, and electronics. Wherever there is a need to microdrill complex components—small, medium, or large—in micrometric precision, without mechanical or thermal stress, EDM is the answer.
In general, EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) can be considered a relatively recent technology. It wasn’t until the 1980s, with the introduction of numerical controls and the development of machines with linear and rotary axes, that its technical performance saw significant improvement—especially for microdrilling applications, thanks to the evolution of ultra-fine microelectrodes.
What challenges can EDM microdrilling solve?
Where traditional drilling techniques fall short, are ineffective, or impossible, EDM microdrilling takes over. With EDM microdrilling, we can:
• Create through or blind holes at specific angles, with high dimensional accuracy, in a range from 0.5 mm to 5.5 mm and depths up to 500 mm
• Minimize mechanical stress and microcracks even in advanced materials (superalloys, conductive ceramics, biomaterials, composites, hard and brittle materials)
• Deliver high-quality internal finishes that are hard to achieve with mechanical drilling techniques
• Obtain high-quality surface finishes directly from the process, significantly reducing the need for further finishing operations
• Ensure repeatable and controllable processes for consistent production across different batches over time
• Drill complex mechanical parts such as thick 3D castings, as well as delicate components or thin profiles
The growing demand from industries for small, high-precision components made from advanced and difficult-to-machine materials has led Silmec Srl to invest in modern CNC machines using EDM technology. These allow for the repeatability and accuracy required even in the most complex operations.
The maturity and experience of our founder, combined with the passion and commitment of the new generation and the entire team, have helped us become a leading expert in the field—offering very short lead times and certified machining quality.
